[iOS] Best Resume Lite helps you create resumes

mzl.jpqrouiq.320x480-75When you call your app the best or the greatest, you are inviting criticism. If you make a bold claim about your app, you’d better be able to back it up. Sadly, more often than not, “best” apps are often sub-par. Best Resume Lite calls itself “best,” but is it, really? Let’s discuss.

What is it and what does it do

Main Functionality

Best Resume Lite is a tool for quickly creating resumes. You can create one from scratch, or make your task easier by importing work histories from LinkedIn.

Pros

  • Create resumes with different colored fonts and different fonts types (4 fonts and 5 colors available to highlight important areas)
  • Easy, “paint by numbers” template makes it easy to plug in information for your resume and build it quickly
  • Import your work history with ease from LinkedIn.
  • Great for creating a resume on the go

Cons

  • Really, REALLY annoying pop up ads that do not relate to in-app content (and then pop up after a few moments of inactivity, over and over again)
  • App hasn’t been updated since its initial launch in March
  • Only two sample resumes to review, both targeted towards “executives”
  • Sample resumes riddled with typos, which makes the app seem less authoritative
  • Templates make the work of creating a resume easy, but they make it hard to customize the look of your resume
  • Users have complained that the app is prone to crashing

Discussion

mzl.puthcxjt.320x480-75I have never, ever experienced such persistent pop-up ads in an iPhone app. These pop-ups are stubborn, reappearing twice a minute even after the first has been dismissed. If you idle for even half a minute, it’s pop-ups for you!

Out of frustration, I eventually clicked “ok” on the pop-ups, hoping that the pop-ups would cease. Oh, how wrong I was. The pop-ups continued. After just 30 seconds or so of inactivity, the pop-ups will re-assert themselves. If you ignore them, the pop-ups continue to stack up, and you’ll need to hit “cancel” repeatedly to dismiss all the windows.

The incessant pop-ups are a major roadblock to getting anything done in this app. That being said, it is simple enough to create a resume in Best Resume Lite. You can easily import your info from LinkedIn, or add it manually as you go step-by-step through the build a resume template. Add in your personal info, a “representation of self,” experience, education, skills, and references, and you’re go to go. There’s also a place to add “other” information, should you have need of it.

Conclusion and download link

This app may be called “Best Resume Lite,” but sadly it is far from “the best.” The pop-up ads alone are enough to condemn this app to the pile of “not worth your time.” On top of that, the app makes it hard to customize resumes, and the app is also prone to crashing. For these reasons, we suggest you skip this app. Perhaps it will improve in Version 1.1?
