Yota is the world’s first two sided smartphone with an E-Ink display

Dual screens are not just for your computer at work anymore. The Russian phone maker Yota Devices has developed a new smartphone that has two screens, one on either side of the device. One is a traditional smartphone LCD screen in all its colorful glory. The other uses E-ink technology like what you would find on an e-reader. The new phone is being labeled the “phone you never turn off.”
The Yota smartphone’s two screens are full size so you won’t miss anything. The idea is, with regular smartphones you have to keep waking the phone up to check for important emails or messages that you may miss. With the Android-based Yota Phone, when you put your phone in sleep you can still check the other side, the E-Ink side, for important messages. It makes checking your messages less distracting and helps potentially save battery. You can do stuff like use the LCD side to search for directions, put your phone to sleep, then flip it to the E-Ink side to follow the messages without having to continually wake your phone up.
“The typical user picks up and activates their smartphone more than 150 times a day,” said Yota Devices CEO Vlad Martynov. “Why? Because users worry that messages or information they need or want are hidden behind their phone’s black screen. This is a huge distraction and can impede meaningful interaction with our friends, families and colleagues.”
The UK can expect to see this phone in stores around March 2014. It will go on sale in other parts of Europe first and will retail for around 499 euros. It is unknown if the phone will make it across the pond.
