When you root Samsung Galaxy S4 SPH-L720 smartphones, you are giving apps access to the root file system so they can work. This opens up the availability of many more apps you can download as APK files or from the Google Play Store.

REQUIREMENTS

• These steps are for the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone with the model number SPH-L720 only.
• The rooting package is based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat with the firmware build KOT49H.L720VPUFNAE. You must downgrade to that firmware and then use this guide.

BEFORE WE BEGIN

• You must unlock the bootloader on the Samsung Galaxy S4 before you can complete this guide.
• Download the Samsung USB Drivers for mobile phones from our USB driver page. If you scroll down the page you will see several options to download the drivers. One will be a third-party link given by us, another is the link through to the Samsung website and the lats options is downloading the ADB drivers by ClockworkMod.
• You must have a Windows PC running Windows XP or above to follow this guide. Moreover, it won’t work for the Windows RT operating system running on some Microsoft Surface tablets.
• You are voiding the Samsung Galaxy S4 warranty when you root the device using the steps below. Any device with Samsung’s Knox security cannot get that warranty working again. However, those without Knox can unroot the device and send it away for free repairs.

HOW TO ROOT SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 SPH-L720 ON ANDROID 5.0.1 LOLLIPOP

• Download the CF-Root file from this link.
• Download the Odin flashing tool from this link.
• Move the files over to the desktop of your computer.
• Right-click over the files and select the ‘extract here’ option.
• Click the Odin executable file so the Odin user-interface opens on the computer.
• Reboot the Samsung Galaxy S4 to download mode.
• Connect your Samsung Galaxy S4 to the computer using the USB cable.
• Click the PDA or AP button inside the Odin user-interface.
• Browser the desktop for the rooting file you need to root your device.
• Click the Start button without changing any of Odin’s default settings.

You can start download the apps that need root access from the Google Play Store and other third-party sources. You can start with the ES File Explorer if you wish.
