About Windows Software of the Day

Windows has hundreds of thousands of programs. Because of this great volume and lack of a central store, software discovery (aka finding new and useful programs) is extremely difficult. With our Windows Software of the Day [6] initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three programs, allowing our readers to discover new software, daily. Enjoy! Software for April 11th, 2012

gExplore

[9]Want to manage your Google Docs without relying on the slow startup speed and relative inease of using a web app? gExplore lets you upload, download, encrypt, rename, and work with collections all without signing into a web browser.

While you can’t edit documents with gExplore, it’s still quite useful: you can encrypt documents before uploading. When you attempt to download the document without decrypting, it turns out useless – and this is why gExplore is worth it at all.

If you’re handling sensitive documents, gExplore may be worth your time to research, as its built-in encryption brings the promise of enhanced cloud security.

Instant Eyedropper

[12]If you’re a web or graphic designer (or a wanna-be like me) you probably need quick access to the color code of whatever you’re working with. Rather than use some bulky selection tool in Photoshop, use Instant Eyedropper: just drag from the icon to the pixel you want and it’ll helpfully show you what you want.

Instant Eyedropper is not just HTML color codes either. It can spit out hex (essentially the same thing), Delphi Hex, RGB, and HSB. If you are constantly needing these values, Instant Eyedropper is a neat little tool you should consider adding to your system.

Version discovered: v1.75

Supported OS: Windows NT/2000/XP/7 (probably Vista)

OEM Configurator

[15]Want to set your own original equipment manufacturer (OEM) information so that whatever you want shows up when you go to System Properties? AskVG’s OEM Configurator allows you to do just that, easily and painlessly.

When I switched my hard drive from my old computer into my new one, it automatically installed all the proper drivers, but neglected to fill out the OEM information, opting instead to delete it all and leave it blank. Now, I can have a laugh every time I go into System Properties instead of having a block of useless whitespace.

OEM Configurator is nice if you’re bored and want to make your computer more customized.

Price: Free!

Version discovered: v2.0

Supported OS: Windows XP/Vista/7/8 CP

Download size: 352KB

VirusTotal malware scan results: 0/43 [16]

dotTechies: We have tested all the software listed above. However, Windows Software of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new programs. Always use your best judgement when downloading programs, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing shareware programs, if applicable.
