Do you guys remember when “cat breading” first hit the scene? For those of you who happened to miss out on this particular memetic trend when it first debuted, cat breading is when you take a slice of sandwich bread, pop out the center bit so it’s just a ring of crust, and pop it over the head of your pet cat. It’s goofy, and pure internet. Now, cat breading has inspired a game called Bread Kittens.

Discussion
Bread Kittens takes place in the fictional paradise of Catlandia. But not all is well in paradise: an evil corporation called ChowCorp is kidnapping kittens and messing with their brains. In this game, you need to save this cats by “breading” them to stop their violent tendencies, while also collecting kittens to join your team and learning new bread recipes to give to your cats.
The battle mechanics in Bread Kittens are quite intuitive. As with so many other games on the App Store, you need to time your attacks precisely. When a needle on the attack gauge hovers over the gold area, attack! Battles are the perfect blend of speed and skill, with each battle never feeling like it’s going to drag on forever. One thing that I really appreciate is how quickly your cats heal.
You’ll want to collect various breeds of cat, but you also want to spend some time upgrading your bakery. You’ll need bread in order to capture feral cats, as well as breads that can increase your HP, damage, capture, or even all your stats. The bakery aspect is clever, and gives you some additional things to focus on besides collecting cats.
This fun timewaster has a few ho-hum elements: the “free slots” and the ability to take pictures of your cat team to share on social media are nice, though not particularly essential to the gameplay. This game is pretty simple, but boy is it addictive. I spent wayyyyy too much time building up my cat team.
Overall, this game is definitely going to appeal to people who love cats, as well as people who get the giggles from memes. While the game does get repetitive after a while, it’s also terribly addictive.
Conclusion and download link
Whether you’re super into “cat breading” or just love cats, this imaginative little game has a lot more substance than you might expect for a game inspired by a simple meme. With fun graphics, surprisingly engaging gameplay, and a clever use of memes, Bread Kittens is worth checking out.
