Twitter mixup has caused many user passwords to be reset

Due to a mistake on Twitter’s part, a number of their users have been sent emails saying that their passwords have been reset.

This incident took place on Monday (March 3) night, and resulted in a bit of a storm on Twitter, with people complaining about the problem.

“Twitter believes that your account may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter,” said the email that the users received. “We’ve reset your password to prevent accessing your account.”

Despite fears that Twitter’s security had been breached, the company announced that the email had been sent out by mistake.

“We unintentionally sent some password reset notices tonight due to a system error,” a Twitter spokesman said to Re/code. “We apologize to the affected users for the inconvenience.”

You can’t blame people for freaking out a little bit though. Twitter did reveal that its system had been compromised by an anonymous hacker group in 2013. The group made away with the personal information of 250,000 people and that included email addresses and usernames.

If you were affected by this, everything should go back to normal after you update your password information.
