A custom recovery is a unique recovery environment that can do all the same things as the stock recovery. However, it can also do some additional tasks. With a custom recovery, you can install ROM zip files and take the device away from the stock Android ROM. We call these custom ROMs. The amount of custom ROMs available for a given device varies, based on what third-party developers have decided to create a custom ROM for the device in question. With just the nature of the business, developers are often found catering for the devices that are more popular. They do that because more people will be using the ROMs. That’s why it’s best to do some research before shopping around for a new device if you plan on installing a custom recovery, followed by a custom ROM.
REQUIREMENTS
- The following guide is only made for the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2. Flashing it on a different version of the Xcover series will brick the device.
BEFORE WE BEGIN
- Download the Samsung USB Drivers for mobile phones from the official source via our page.
- You must have a Windows PC to follow this guide. The Odin flashing tool is made by Samsung for Windows operating systems only.
- You are voiding the warranty installing a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod recovery. You can extract the stock ROM and find the stock recovery inside the folder. Flash that stock recovery with Odin and your device will have the stock ROM on it again. Once you do that, you can send it away under warranty.
INSTALLING A CUSTOM RECOVERY ON THE SAMSUNG GALAXY XCOVER 2
- Download the ClockworkMod mirror link from its XDA Developers thread here.
- Download the Odin tool to the desktop from here.
- Extract the Odin flashing tool on the Windows PC.
- Run the Odin app on the computer so it’s working when we connect to it soon.
- Extract the CWM recovery file. Drag that file from its folder over to the desktop.
- Long-press the Power button until you know the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 is definitely off.
- Hold the Power + Home + Volume Down buttons when rebooting the device. You should now be in download mode.
- Let go of those buttons and press the Volume Up button on the warning screen. Now you are ready to use the device in download mode.
- Connect the Galaxy Xcover 2 to the computer with the USB cable.
- The ID: COM port will now light up with a color to let you know the Xcover 2 is connected. If you don’t see any color, that means there is a driver issue. Either download them if you didn’t already or try rebooting the computer.
- Check the re-partition box is left empty.
- Check the Auto reboot and F Reset Time options are on.
- Click the Start button when you are confident everything is in place.
- Odin will now take some minutes to flash your Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 with the custom recovery image.
- Do not unplug the device until you see the pass message on the display from the Odin tool.
Now you can boot your device in that recovery by pressing the Volume Down + Power buttons after turning it off. If that doesn’t work, press the Volume Up + Power buttons.
