For those who don’t know what anagram, lexigram, phoneme or palindrome means, the definitions are quoted here directly from the Oxford English Dictionary:

Anagram = A word, phrase, or name formed by rearranging the letters of another, such as spar, formed from rasp

Lexigram = A symbol representing a word, especially one used in learning a language

Phoneme = Any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another, for example p, b, d, and t in the English words pad, pat, bad, and bat

Palindrome = A word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backwards as forwards, e.g. madam or nurses run

This program generates reverse dictionaries. It allows a right-click on a word to get the definition. The Word Search works for multi-word solutions. For you as a crossword puzzler, its main use may be to do a word search where you have missing letters.

Non-existing dictionaries may still be displayed on the Anagram Generator’s interface. In addition, the program is really suitable for non-diacritic languages only, as clearly stated by the help file: ‘The dictionaries for other languages do not support accents or other language specific characters’.

Download the installer, and extract to a folder of your choice. To use it as portable software, you must select ‘Portable USB drive installation’.

Copy & paste the contents given below onto the “Notepad” window, and Save As Anagram.ini (change .txt to .ini). Save this file to the folder of anagram.exe.

Else, it will complain about missing dictionary files. Launch anagram.exe.

Anagram Settings

In the main window, if you go to the Anagrams tab, type in a word next to ‘Source phrase’, and hit Enter, it will come up with the “Anagram Settings” dialog box where you can select ‘Minimum subword size’, ‘Maximum subword size’, ‘Max words in anagrams’, check (or uncheck) ‘Show search progress (slower)’, check (or uncheck) ‘Save lexigram results with anagrams’, and click OK (as shown in the above picture). When anagram search is completed, you can see how it looks like when anagram phrases are generated:
