About iOS Apps of the Day

iOS has over 600,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our iOS Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! [Subscribe to dotTech to never miss an article: RSS Feed | E-mail]

Apps for August 17, 2012

BuddyTV Guide

BuddyTV Guide is a customizable channel guide that makes it easy to create your own personalized TV lineup, find new shows you’ll love, and never miss your favorites. The app provides the usual program and schedule info, but unlike other TV companion apps, BuddyTV Guide allows you to create your own TV line-up that excludes channels you never watch. The app also allows you to build your own watch list of favorite TV shows (with trailers and previews) and create customizable reminders that alert you of new airings from that list. BuddyTV Guide also caters to your local cable provider and integrates with your DVR (if compatible), as well as Netflix, Amazon and iTunes. The app provides social features as well, like the ability to tweet your thoughts and share on Facebook. Lastly, it is definitely worth noting that BuddyTV Guide has a developing feature that allows you to use the app as a remote control for certain cable/satellite devices. I was unable to test the service due to my Verizon Fios box not being compatible yet, but the remote control feature could be a major feature if the number of supported devices is expanded in the near feature.

DMD Panorama

DMD Panorama is the easiest-to-use panoramic picture app on the App Market. I have tested several Panoramic apps that have gone free at various times and none of them compare to DMD Panorama. Some might be cheaper, but this app is worth the extra dollar. After snapping your first photo, DMD Panorama uses a beautifully designed dual reticule marker at the top of the shooting screen to perfectly align the next adjacent photo in the panoramic view. In my experience, this has lead to breathtaking panoramic pictures. DMD Panorama allows you to save your photos to your device and also provides an optional online account as well. There is also a web gallery to discover many public panoramas, as well as a local feature that allows you to see photos taken in your area.

Matching with Friends Free

Matching with Friends Free is a new game from Zynga, the makers of the popular Words with Friends and Hanging with Friends. Zynga has moved away from the word game genre to create a competitive match-3 game. I must admit that I have seen similar games on the App Market, but as usual, Zynga has taken the game and made it incredibly well designed and most importantly for them, seriously addictive. Matching with Friends Free provides you with three vertical pieces made of 3 square blocks of varying colors. The goal is to line up as many 3 block matches as possible to earn points. Along the way, the app provides not only multipliers and color bonuses to increase your score, but also special bombs that can remove pieces that might help your opponent or are preventing you from getting a big scoring move. Obviously Zynga wants to earn money, so they use a coin system to charge for extra bombs if you go beyond your 2 bomb quota per game. The game also charges to swap pieces if don’t like a piece. The key, though, is that you don’t need the coins to play the game. And remember, this is Zynga we are talking about, so you will get notifications when it is your turn to play, the ability to chat with your opponent during the game, and the option for a random opponent. It is worth noting that free version has an ad after every round, and the only way to remove it is to upgrade.
