PressReader is an excellent newspaper (and magazine) reading application for your phone. The app currently boasts over 2,200 complete newspapers from a total of 97 countries (in 54 languages), every one of which can be automatically delivered straight to your phone. PressReader provides exact replicas of each newspaper, so you don’t lose out on the typical reading experience, but you eliminate all of the trash/recyclables piling up in your house or garage.
After perusing through the PressReader’s app, I must say that I am quite impressed. When reading the newspapers, they are absolutely as clear and crisp as possible. Page turning is easily accomplished with a simple swipe to the right or left. The user is given two ways to read the newspaper, which I think is a good decision by the developer. You can read the old fashioned way and zoom (two-finger pinch) in on the articles you are interested in as you go. The other option is to simply click on the headline of any article (which is very conveniently highlighted in blue) and you will taken to a digital copy of your article created for easy reading. You might wonder what happens if you see the common “continued to page #” at the bottom of an article in a typical newspaper. PressReader handles this efficiently by always including the full article in its digital copy. The developers even go above and beyond with the option to listen to the full articles as well.
PressReader provides the option to print full articles (or individual pages), save articles to Evernote or Instapaper, or share articles to Facebook or Twitter. The app also provides full copy-paste functionality and the option to send articles by email to whomever you like. Another great feature is the option to search through any individual or group of newspapers for certain text. This would be very useful if you had heard about a story on the radio or television and wanted to find an article written about it. PressReader also provides a Top Stories feed from every newspaper in its collection that you can browse through at your leisure.
It is important to note that while the app is free, you will need to pay a monthly fee in order to subscribe. The membership fee is $29.95 per month for all of your favorite newspapers or you could pay-as-you-go with the $0.99 per newspaper subscription. The company currently has millions of subscribers worldwide.
