Summer vacation is right around the corner, and that means households all across America will soon be resounding with that all-to-familiar refrain, “I’m bored!” Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly activity to do with your kids, or looking for a great event to attend in the evening, Calendo Event Discovery can help keep you amused and entertained.
What is it and what does it do
Main Functionality
Calendo Event Discovery is an iPhone app that makes personalized recommendations about events that might be interesting for you, from concerts and sports to private parties and local events.
Pros
- Finds and suggests events that are suited to your tastes
- “Learns” what type of events you like best over time
- Recommendations can be huge events like concerts or sporting events, or they might be for smaller, more simple gatherings like yoga classes or gallery openings
- Calendo takes privacy seriously, and promises to never post anything on Facebook without your permission
Cons
- You need to log in with Facebook, and Facebook alone, in order to “create your taste patterns”
Discussion
Calendo uses a really sophisticated algorithm to make its predictions. This app discovers events you might want to attend based on data pulled from past events you’ve attended, what events your friends are planning to attend, and the location of events you’ve attended.
In the press release, it was interesting to note that Calendo users attend more events after they start using the app than they did in the past. According to press materials, during the beta phase of testing, users attended an average of 13 events per month using Calendo, compared to just 4 events attended when using Facebook alone.
I think that this app is very simple to navigate, and it loads new event recommendations quickly. There’s also a good social component here, with the app making it very simple to share events you’ve discovered with your friends or family.
I think the next logical step for this app is to incorporate other social networking profiles. After all, people do tend to have multiple social networking accounts, and they tend to use them in different ways. Adding your LinkedIn data would allow the app to suggest relevant business conferences, conventions, or networking meet-ups that would be of interest to someone in your line of work, for example.
Giving people the chance to add their Twitter or other social networking accounts to their Facebook data would give Calendo a chance to zero in on trends, newsworthy events, and generally give Calendo more data to work with…thus ensuring better recommendations.
Conclusion and download link
The numbers speak for themselves: Calendo users attend more events that regular Facebook users, and 90 percent of Calendo users attend events that Calendo brought to their attention. If you’re tired of being bored, this intelligent app may just be the perfect way to find something fun to do in your area.
