Proximity is a location sharing app that texts your location information. Millions of texts are sent out every day to friends & family in regard to travel time. For example, many spouses will text when the leave work and estimate how long it will take. Proximity’s goal is to streamline and automate this process. The way it works is you choose a preset time period and geo-fence (i.e. geographic region) and Proximity will send out private location messages under those constraints. So, for example, if you are leaving work at 5pm, you can set up a private SMS message saying “Almost There” to be sent to your spouse between 5 and 6 pm (on a specific date) whenever you arrive within 5 miles of your home. It is important to note that your location is only shared privately with the person you choose and any messages sent do not count towards your SMS carrier quota. The app will also not work if you turn off GPS or are out of cellular network range.
This is quite a unique app that could really cut down on SMS message use for those who don’t have unlimited plans. I am would love to see the option for recurring messages to be send out on certain days, but the app does a good job streamlining the “I’ll be home soon” SMS process with friends & family.
