Are you a fan of knowledge? Of course you are, and Wikipedia is a great place to both find new information and contribute to others’ quest to do the same. Unfortunately, certain places–such as airplanes, Alaska, and the middle of the ocean–do not have cellular data, and even if they did, could potentially be very expensive if you attempted to load up a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia Encyclopedia Offline is a free app that solves this issue by bringing the entire textual database of Wikipedia offline onto your Android device.
Wikipedia Encyclopedia Offline is not actually all of Wikipedia. It takes up a massive 3.6GB of SD card space, but actually contains only the top 200 million articles on Wikipedia, which is still more than enough to cover the majority of tiny French villages and ethic Indonesian dishes. It features nearly instant searching, including article bodies, history, bookmarks, and pretty much everything you’d expect to find in a Wikipedia app. It does not have the ability to load pictures from the internet, however.
There’s an entire planet worth of data on Wikipedia, and the text alone from it is multiple gigabytes. Getting a sizable chunk of it onto your phone with Wikipedia Encyclopedia Offline is really quite amazing. It’s unclear how often the database is uploaded, but since the last app update was last June, it’s not too terribly out of date. If you’re looking to bring the world with you on your trip, Wikipedia Encyclopedia Offline is a great choice.
