How to disable or turn off zoom with mouse or touchpad in Firefox [Guide]

Ever accidentally zoom on a website in Firefox while trying to scroll with your mouse wheel or your touchpad? (Firefox zooms in/out when you use you try to scroll with your mouse wheel or touchpad while holding the CTRL key.) Yeah, it happens to me often. And it is so bloody annoying, I decided enough is enough and went to find a way to disable this functionality. Then I thought: maybe I’m not the only one having this issue, so why not share. So here I am. This article will show you how to disable zooming in Firefox with your mouse wheel or touchpad.

This trick should work on all versions of Firefox that support zoom with mouse wheel or touchpad. Also, take note this works on all versions of Windows — Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. If you are on a Mac, you can also disable zoom with mouse wheel or touchpad but you will need to do something a bit different, and this guide will show you what.

That said, let’s begin…

To disable or turn of zoom with mouse wheel or touchpad in Firefox on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, do the following:

  • Run Firefox.
  • In the address bar, type about:config and hit Enter on your key.
  • You will be shown a warning message and asked if you want to continue. Click I’ll be careful, I promise.
  • Now type mousewheel.with_control.action in the Search bar at the top of about:config page.
    • NOTE: Mac OS X users need to type in mousewheel.with_meta.action and follow all the remaining steps mentioned here but for mousewheel.with_meta.action instead of with mousewheel.with_control.action.
  • Finally, double-click mousewheel.with_control.action from Preference Name, enter 0 (the number zero) in the dialog box that opens, and click OK:

  • Done! If you have some websites zoomed in, be sure to clear browsing history to remove the zoom… and then never worry about this annoying as hell feature again.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This has been killing me, so happy to have this disabled!

  • Thank you very much for this! This has been driving me nuts on a laptop I have that has a touchscreen, it was constantly zooming in and out when I was just trying to scroll up and down by dragging 2 fingers. If my fingers accidentally got closer together or further apart it would zoom.

Now I can easily scroll up and down without any accidental zooming happening, it is MUCH better this way, with mousewheel.with_control.action set to 0 in about:config, and I can still zoom in or out if I really want to through the usual methods, like CONTROL-PLUS to zoom in and CONTROL-MINUS to zoom out and CONTROL-ZERO to reset zoom level to the default.

Now if only we could do something about the upcoming Firefox 57 disabling all so-called “legacy” addons (i.e. most of my favorite Firefox extensions)!

Thanks for this. I work on a touch/pen Wacom tablet and was accidentally triggering this constantly and it was driving me insane. There’s no user preference for it all and I had disabled the “Zoom” gestures universally but it was still happening in Firefox. This is ridiculous and Mozilla should’ve fixed it by now.

For those who don’t want to disable the function …
Just press Ctrl-0 to quickly reset the zoom level back to default.

[@Ashraf] I’m one that was looking for ages for this fix. Thanks!

[@A&L] Gee really? Who would have thought.

This article is for those who always doing it accidentally. I often accidentally zoom using my touchpad because I frequently use hotkeys that involve CTRL. For me, it is better to disable this functionality altogether.

    [@Ashraf] ¬†Thanks, I didn’t know about Ctrl+Mouse-wheel.
I’ve been wasting my time with Ctrl and the plus or minus keys.

A&L, you dare tell the great Ashraf that there’s an easy solution? After he wrote an entire article on it? Now that’s funny! Oops…

  • A&L

Or you could just not hold ctrl while scrolling the mouse wheel
