Wouldn’t it be great if you have a tool or software that could easily convert your PDF files into Word, Excel, Text or Powerpoint? Well, there are quite a few out there that are reliable enough to convert your files into other document formats but how about a tool that does it all? Speaking of which, there is this desktop application called Cometdocs and it is said to convert your PDF document into other document formats and vice versa.
What Is It and What Does It Do
Main Functionality
The desktop application of Cometdocs is basically an extension of its web application and it’s primarily meant to convert your PDF files into other formats such as Word, Text, Excel, Powerpoint, JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, TIF and vice versa. What makes this desktop app more appealing is that it lets you convert your files in just a few clicks. This is because this software will automatically create a shortcut for its application in your Windows context menu. So instead of logging in to your web app, you can just use the desktop application to instantly convert your files into a format that you like.
All you need to do is to right-click on the PDF file that you want to convert then select the option for “Convert To”. After that, choose your preferred output format and then you wait until the converted file will be downloaded to your computer. On the other hand, if you want to convert a non-PDF file into a PDF, just simply right-click on the file then select “Create PDF”.
Pros
- Simple, user-friendly interface
- Fast and accurate file conversion
- Can convert PDF files into Text, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Libre Writer, Libre Calc, Libre Presentation, Webpage, DWG, DXF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF and TIF
- Can convert non-PDF files into PDF
- Adds a shortcut item into your contextual menu so you can just “right-click” on the document every time you want to convert it into a different format
- Automatically downloads the converted file into your local folder
- Gives you 2GB of online storage since your account is automatically linked to the Cometdocs web app
Cons
- Your files are uploaded to Cometdocs.com for conversion… which is not ideal if you have confidential files
- You cannot use the desktop app unless you’re signed-in to your Cometdocs account, meaning you need to have an active internet connection to use Cometdocs
- Registered (free) users are only limited to five conversions per week
- There’s a file size limit of 100MB
- You cannot upload and convert multiple files at once
- You cannot convert images into text via OCR
Discussion
The desktop application of Cometdocs is a great option for users who wish to convert their files without having to open their web browsers. Through this desktop app, you can convert large files with a maximum file size limit of 100MB. Just keep in mind that you cannot use this tool unless you sign in to your account so you basically need to register as a new Cometdocs user. The registration is free but the features that are available to free users are limited.
Speaking of which, free users are only allowed to convert up to five files per week and you are also not allowed to upload and convert multiple files at once. Aside from this, you are not allowed to extract text from images. This feature is only available to those paid Cometdocs subscribers.
On the lighter side, this desktop app is a very accurate file converter. It can quickly convert your PDF files into other formats such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Text, JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, etc. You can also use it to convert non-PDF files into PDF. What is great about this tool is that you can instantly convert a file via the context menu. Just right-click the file that you want to convert, select your preferred file output format and that’s it! All that is left for you to do is to wait until the desktop app notifies you that your file has been successfully converted. You also do not need to worry about your original file for it will be preserved. Furthermore, the converted file will be automatically downloaded to the same folder so there’s no need for you to search or open a different folder.
What I also like about this tool is that it is non-obtrusive. You can keep it hidden in your system tray area. It’s also very accessible since there’s no need for you to find your file converter in the program list. It also supports a lot of document formats so your options are not limited.
Conclusion and Download Link
Cometdocs is a great choice especially for users who are often in need of a fast, reliable and accurate document converter. The free version does limit you in the number of conversions you can do per week, but if you really need to use it so much that you find yourself regularly hitting that five documents per week limit then you should think about upgrading to the paid service anyway. Overall, I find Cometdocs to be excellent… as long as you don’t mind having to upload your files to their server for conversion. If this doesn’t bother you, then grab Cometdocs. If you prefer offline conversion, then check out UniPDF, a freeware PDF to Word converter.
