Apps for May 29, 2012

Color Splash FX

Ever see those photos that are black and white with only portions colored? Yeah, well, ever wondered if you could do that yourself? You can with Color Splash FX. Color Splash FX is an app that turns photos (existing photos or new photos you snap on the spot) to black and white; then it lets you color back the portions you want colored. The end result is a photo that looks awesome.

What makes Color Splash FX great is it is extremely easy to use. You select or snap a photo and Color Splash FX automatically turns the whole photo black and white. You then use your finger to re-paint the area you want colored. There is no need to select specific colors because Color Splash FX automatically puts back the colors that were originally in the photo. To get better accuracy you have the ability to zoom in/out (using pinch-to-zoom); and there is an undo feature and a white/black brush you can use to fix any mistakes you may make while painting. Color Splash FX claims it automatically picks the proper brush size based on your finger size but if that isn’t good enough for you, you have the ability to modify brush size, paint opacity, and ‘edge’.

Once you are happy with a photo you can save it or share it via e-mail, messaging, or any other app that accepts image inputs. Take note all images are saved in 640×480 resolution regardless of what the resolution was originally.

Color Splash FX has a free and paid version. The free version is ad-supported and has all the features mentioned above. The paid version is ad-free and adds more features such as increased zoom (up to 20x), showing brush tip, magnify area under finger tip, and highlight colored area with a red tint.

Extreme Skater

Enjoyed iStunt 2? Extreme Skater is a similar game — except this time you ride a skateboard instead of a snowboard. Extreme Skater, the Android version of MiniClip’s web game Extreme Skater, is a game where you control a skateboarder through 78 levels (which cover two ‘worlds’) – tilting your device to control movement and do tricks, swiping to jump, tapping to hang on to ropes, etc. The goal is to reach the end of each level after which you collect a piece of the meteor fragment. Along the way there are coins you can collect which can be used in the store to unlock tricks, boards, and riders; and levels have multiple paths you can take, so replay-ability is high.

Extreme Skater is a free, ad-supported game. To remove ads you can make an in-app purchase which also unlocks all levels (otherwise you need to manually progress to each level to play it).

Wondershare PowerCam

Wondershare PowerCam is a camera app that has four special features. The first is the ability to add filters and effects to photos (you must snap new photos to add filters/effects — you can’t add to existing photos); there are thirty three filters/effects plus a ‘random’ selection that picks a filter or effect randomly. The second is the ability to create panoramic photos, just like what Wondershare Panorama does. The third is ‘FaceTimer’ which uses “advanced face tracking technology” to make snapping portraits of people easier. The last is ‘Tilt-Shift’ which, according to Wondershare “is a unique type of photography in which the life-sized location or subject looks like a miniature-scale model”.

Once you snap a photo of your liking it is saved to your device and you have the ability to share it via Facebook and Twitter.

Take note PowerCam supports front camera and back camera and flash (if applicable). However, at this time PowerCam can only snap photos of 640×480 or 1280×960 resolution regardless of how many megapixels your Android device supports. Also note filters and effects cannot be edited after you snap a photo — you must select the filter/effect you want before you snap a photo.
