On Windows 7, hitting the Win+D keyboard shortcut automatically minimizes all of your windows and shows the desktop. It has some pretty big issues, however: it’s either all windows at once, or none at all. You can’t hide only Chrome or only Notepad, leaving Command Prompt and Paint open. You also can’t hide and then switch through just that hidden set. PutAside is different: rather than minimizing all of your windows, it actually hides them all, and leaves you to switch through a stack of hidden windows.
Hiding windows is simple: a quick tap of Shift+Scrolllock will make your desktop appear and the windows disappear. Then you can open up other windows, leaving your previously visible windows entirely unaffected. When you use PutAside’s secret window-switching keyboard shortcut Scrolllock, you’ll switch between the windows you previously had open. It’s very handy for anyone who likes to browse the web or play games while they’re supposed to be working: hide all windows as soon as you see the boss, and then secretly switch to the window containing your actual work.
PutAside is super-simple, but that’s entirely understating it. It’s a powerful window-hiding tool, and is both intuitive and quite useful, lending itself to both at-home situations and at-work situations. Especially helpful for the work crowd is that it’s an entirely portable tool: there’s no need to get IT’s approval, as in most places you can slide it in under the radar undetected.
