If you’re old enough, you’ll probably remember this popular RPG called Final Fantasy 7 on the original Sony PlayStation. It’s one of those games that will never die, one of those games that seem to always find a way to bring new fans into the experience. Another way developer Square Enix is attempting to bring new players into the world of “Gaia,” is by making Final Fantasy available for purchase on Steam.
What you may not know, is that this is not the first time Square Enix released Final Fantasy 7 on the PC, back when the company was known as Squaresoft, before the merger with Enix in 2003. The game was re-leased again for Windows in 2012 as a digital downloadable title on Square Enix’s website, a year later, it is now available on Steam for the cool price of $11.99.
You might be wondering, are there any differences to the re-released PC version Final Fantasy 7 compared to the original. There is actually, the new version allows for cloud saving and the ability to unlock achievements. Unfortunately, there are no improvements in the graphics department to make things look sharper and smoother.
Furthermore, some PC gamers are quite angry over the addition of the inferior MIDI version of the soundtrack instead of the original PlayStation version. In addition to that, the game has online DRM, which requires an internet connection every time the game starts up. This is quite surprising since Final Fantasy 7 is 15 years old, why should such an old game require DRM is quite puzzling.
We can understand the need to cut down on piracy since it thrives in the PC gaming community, but this is an old game that lacks an online multiplayer component, so Square Enix should take that into consideration.
