Microsoft is getting into the 3D printing game. With their newest version of Windows 8, Windows 8.1, the guru’s out at Microsoft have added a new application that will help those not so 3D savvy make their own pieces. All you need is a Windows 8.1 computer and a 3D printer that is Windows 8.1 ready.

Microsoft isn’t stupid, they know that not a lot of people have both Windows 8.1 and an 8.1 compatible printer but that does make the program any less cool.

According to Microsoft’s blog the 3D Builder has a catalog of pieces for you to use to build your perfect model. You can then add you own personal touches to make it really neat. The library has items such as cookie cutters and baskets for household use. It even has train engines, cabooses, and track pieces so you can make your own train set. The whole point of the program is to make it user friendly and allow you to design without having to have a graphic design background. The 3D Builder also allows you to import objects created in other programs.

Maybe it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that big name programs have, but those programs pretty much expect you to know how to design in CAD first. There is only a small learning curve with the 3D Builder.
