Android apps of the day [March 28, 2012]

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! SeriesGuide Show Manager

If you watch a lot of TV shows, it is often hard to keep track of which episodes you have watched and which episodes you have not… especially if you prefer watching TV on your computer (e.g. Hulu or Netflix) as opposed to on an actual TV. SeriesGuide Show Manager is an app that helps you keep track of episodes you have watched and episodes you have yet to watch for your favorite TV shows.

SeriesGuide Show Manager is pretty simple. You add the show(s) you want to track, then mark episodes as “watched” as you watch them. SeriesGuide Show Manager then displays information on the next episode that will air for episodes that continue to air. You can share episode information with friends – such as through Facebook, GetGlue, and trakt – and even set a reminder on your calender to watch the episode when it airs. (Take note all show timings are USA based [Pacific Standard Time].)SeriesGuide Show Manager makes it easy to mark whole seasons as watched, so you need not worry about how you will start tracking the progress of a show that is seven seasons in.

SeriesGuide Show Manager needs Internet access to add new shows and download/update information about existing shows. However, once you have downloaded the relevant information, SeriesGuide Show Manager works without Internet access.

SeriesGuide Show Manager is free while SeriesGuide X costs $1.29. Oddly enough, the developer does not mention what are the feature differences between SeriesGuide Show Manager and SeriesGuide X.

WiFi File Transfer

WiFi File Transfer allows users to wirelessly access files located on their Android device from their computers (no USB cord required). All you need to do is make sure the Android device and the computer are on the same WiFi network (public WiFi networks are supported — there is an option to password protect, if you are using a public WiFi). Once you run WiFi File Transfer on your Android, you are given a local URL/IP address you must visit in the Internet browser on your computer. Once you visit it you have access to all the files on your Android device: you can download files from and upload files to your Android; you can copy, rename, and delete files; files and folders can be zipped; ZIP files can be unzipped; new folders can be created; and there is a built-in image gallery for viewing your photos.

WiFi File Transfer has two versions, a free and Pro. WiFi File Transfer (the free version) is fully functional except you cannot upload files larger than 4 MB. WiFi File Transfer Pro removes this 4 MB upload limit.

Price: Free, $1.4o

Version discovered: v1.0.1

Requires: Android 2.1 and up

Download size: 438 KB

BaldBooth

Want to know how you look bald? BaldBooth is more than obliged to show you. BaldBooth is a fun app that makes people bald. No, not literally — your hair won’t start falling out once you download and run BaldBooth. Rather, with BaldBooth users either snap a photo (of themselves or someone else) or use an existing photo (of themselves or someone else); BaldBooth analyzes the photo and asks you to set markers where the eyes, ears, and eyebrows are; then BaldBooth erases the hair on the head and returns the picture of the now bald person. Bald pictures can be trashed, shared via e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter, or saved (if you are proud of yourself).

Be warned BaldBooth works best on people with short hair.

Price: Free

Version discovered: v1.0

Requires: Android 2.1 and up

Download size: 5.8 MB

dotTechies: We have tested all the apps listed above. However, Android Apps of the Day articles are not intended as “reviews” but rather as “heads-up” to help you discover new apps. Always use your best judgement when downloading apps, such as trying trial/free versions before purchasing paid apps, if applicable.
