Welcome to dotTech’s new server, sorry for mass e-mails and downtime

December 5, 2012 12 Email article | Print article

Hey dotTechies,

dotTech last made a server upgrade roughly two years ago. Because dotTech has been growing, recently sometimes dotTech would slow to a crawl due to more traffic than our old server could handle. So I decided to upgrade servers and move to a stronger machine, and move we have. If you are reading this, you are officially on dotTech’s new server!

This new server is 2x-3x stronger than our previous server, so if you had any issues with slow loading… you shouldn’t have them anymore (unless the slow loading is related to your Internet connection — I cannot fix that). If you do have any slow loading issues, or any other issues, please do post a comment below and let me know so I can address it. I tried my best to avoid breaking anything but it is inevitable that a server change brings technical problems, and I’d like to get ahead of these problems before they become significant issues, so please do make sure to notify me if you run into an issue.

I am one of those people who loves to make website upgrades without shutting down the website. However, try as hard as I did, I unfortunately had to bring down dotTech for a few minutes today while moving servers — I apologize for that! (Did anyone see the “Be Back Soon” message?)

Additionally, something seemed to have gone wrong earlier today and some e-mail subscribers received dozens of the same e-mail. I sincerely apologize for that — I don’t know what happened and it wasn’t intentional.

Congrats to everyone that makes this community so great — it is all your support that has enabled this growth and upgrade.

    @chuck: Thanks! Got it for an excellent price, too. I’m going to write a review on my web host soon so you will know more then, if you are interested.

    Probably not directly related to your new server, but I have a suggestion.
    Perhaps an article on how any cheapskate (that’s me, not you) can have a web page hosted somewhere, for free, or minimal cost ?

    @Don:
    I will keep an eye on it, until a few people have tried it, and commented on it (posted comments on the web page you provided the link for).
    Thanks,
    Rob
