How to identify unknown file types online [Tip]

If you have an unknown file type and are not sure how to open it, check out the Online TrID File Identifier. That’s an app that can identify loads of alternative file types. It provides further details for the file types and the software that you can open them with.

Open the Online TrID File Identifier page in the shot below. There press the Browse button to select a file to analyze. For example, for further details about the odb file type select any file with that extension.

Next, press the Analyze button on the page. TrID will then show you matching file types as in the shot below. The ID might also include page links to Wikipedia that provide further details for the file type.

Now click on the EXE links to open the File Extension Seeker in the page below. That includes a list of links to pages that provide further details for the extension. Those pages might also tell you what software packages you can use to open the files with.

For example, click on the File Extensions link to open the page below. That provides details for the default software associated with the file type. A little further down the page it lists other programs that open the file type.
