About Android Apps of the Day

Android has over 450,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our Android Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! Poke It Together

Poke It Together is a very simple two player whack-a-mole game for Android. The game splits the screen for each player, with one player playing on the top half of the screen and the second player playing on the bottom half of the screen. (Both players play simultaneously.) Each match has three rounds and whichever player has the most points at the end of the third round wins. There is nothing more to this game; there are no settings (aside from turning sound/vibration on/off) or anything to this game aside from the gameplay; all you do is run it and play it with a friend.

Profile Scheduler

One extremely useful function on most feature phones was (is) the ability to switch between multiple “profiles”, with each profile having slightly different phone settings such as a different ringtone, or being silent, or on vibrate, etc. Profile Scheduler is an app for Android that does something similar. With Profile Scheduler users create profiles and define specific device settings in those profiles; then when a profile is put in use, Profile Scheduler automatically changes device settings to whatever is defined in the profile that is enabled. Each profile can have any mix of settings desired. Profile Scheduler has the ability to control volume for ringtone, notification, alarm, media, voice and system; vibrate for incoming call and notification; phone ringtone; notification ringtone; airplane mode; mobile data; WiFi; Bluetooth; GPS (may not work on some phones due to Android security settings); speaker mode; haptic feedback; audible touch tone; brightness – automatic, default or custom; screen timeout – 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, never; auto-sync; wallpaper; and launch application. Each profile can have a customized list of any of the settings above.

Furthermore, to help automate the use of profiles, Profile Scheduler has a “Scheduler” feature which can be used to automatically enable/disable profiles based on specific time of the day and/or day of the week; and each profile can be set a “Timer” which makes it so the profile is automatically disabled after X minutes. To make the package even sweeter, there is a “Rules” feature which automatically enables/disables a specific profile based on a specific action, such as if WiFi is enabled or if you connect a headset; and a whitelist/blacklist which tells Profile Scheduler to ignore profile settings for specific phone numbers (i.e. will allow certain numbers to still ring).

Profile Scheduler comes in free and paid versions. Profile Scheduler (free) is ad-supported and does everything described above. Profile Scheduler+ (the paid version) is ad-free and provides some more features such as widgets that allow for quick toggle between profiles. Take note on Profile Scheduler+’s Play Store page it lists the ability to create unlimited rules as a reason to purchase Profile Scheduler+, which indirectly means Profile Scheduler (free version) can only create a limited amount of rules. However, Profile Scheduler (free version)’s Play Store page does not list any such limitation, so I’m not sure exactly how many rules Profile Scheduler (free version) can create.

Fancy

Are you a notorious window shopper? Then Fancy may be for you. Fancy, described as a “part blog, part magazine and part bookmarking tool” by its developer, is an app where you can look at images of stuff you probably will never have. Think of Fancy as Instagram for products; people share images of all sorts of stuff on Fancy and you “Fancy” the ones you like (similar to Facebook’s “Like”). All “Fancied” images/products are saved in the “Your Collection” section which you can easily revisit at any time in the future. You also have the ability to share your own product images, follow people, and leave comments on images. Most product images on Fancy come with a price tag so if you really feel the need to purchase something, you can make a purchase from right within Fancy.

To use Fancy you either need a Facebook, Twitter, or Fancy account. If you don’t use Facebook or Twitter, creating a Fancy account is free and painless.
