What if you could turn those lovely melodies you hum in the shower into real sheet music? Even better, what if you turn them into sheet music instantly, like some kind of magician?
Researchers at the KTH Institute of Technology in Sweden have developed a unique smartphone application called ScoreCleaner Notes that will convert those sweet melodies you love to hum so much into notated scripts. Essentially, all you have to do is play the tune, meanwhile the smartphone app records it, and then the software will translate the key, tempo and time signature right into usable notation. I’m willing to bet that a couple musicians out there would find this very useful.
Furthermore, to use the app you don’t even have to know how to write music or even read sheet music. The application will accurately convert the melodies, and then users can play back the tune through an integrated MIDI piano or the original recording.
Of course, what would a modern app be without any kind of social features? Once you record a tune through ScoreCleaner you can share it via email, or any number of social networks. A ScoreCleaner Cloud account is also available which offers cloud storage, and even synchronizes with the desktop version of ScoreCleaner.
There are some limitations though, like being restricted to just a single melody stream at a time, and the conversion process is done via the cloud which means you’ll need an active internet connection to properly use the app.
ScoreCleaner is currently available for the iPhone, but there’s an accompanying desktop application, as well. The desktop software is nearly identical to the mobile version, except you can also connect a midi synthesizer to compose music.
