Underwater audio devices are nothing new. For example, Finis –the company we’re going to talk about- has been making underwater audio devices or headsets for quite a while. The Finis SwiMP3 has been around for at least five years already. It’s a unique MP3 player that works underwater thanks to bone conduction technology. The user straps the device to a pair of goggles, and it makes contact with their cheekbone. This allows the device to transmit audio to the user’s inner ear through bone conductivity.

Finis just expanded its lineup by offering a new player called the Neptune. For the Neptune, Finis improved the design and features of the previous model to offer a better underwater audio device.

This is all fine and dandy, but just what the hell are you going to use an underwater audio device for? Well, that’s an easy question to answer. Have you ever been swimming and thought the following:

“Wow this would be a great time for some killer tunes!”

With the Neptune, and the older SwiMP3 player you can do some serious jamming under the surface of the deep blue ocean- it also works in a pool or Jacuzzi, so there’s that too. If you’d much rather listen to podcasts or audiobooks while doing your flipper thing, that’s okay, as well.

The Neptune includes 4GB of internal storage, a small OLED display, and it’s waterproof up to 10 feet (3 meters). Finis also made sure the device is fully compatible with iTunes so you can easily load some great tunes onto the device.

The Neptune uses the same 3 piece design as the original SwiMP3, with two side speakers and a control unit that houses the OLED display, it rests comfortably on the back of the user’s head with the side speakers attached to goggle straps.

Unfortunately, the map of authorized dealers on the official website doesn’t show any US retailers carrying the Neptune. That doesn’t mean you cannot import the device, until it becomes available here in the States. The current price is around $160 for the Neptune headset.
