The New Century Global Center in China just opened its doors after three years of construction. Its located in Chengdu, which is the capital of Sichuan in southwestern China. Officials claim that it is the “largest freestanding building in the world.”

It might not be apparent by looking at these pictures, but this at least sounds like a very big building. It measures 500 meters long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high. Supposedly, it can house 20 Sydney Opera Houses and its around three times the size of the Pentagon.

But what it really has inside it are business offices, movie theaters, malls, a Mediterranean-style village, a water park and hotels. There are multiple malls and hotels in this thing — wow. Now all that’s left is for its officials to hope and pray it doesn’t turn into a ghost town like some of the other ambitious structures in China.

Here’s another photo that should help give you a better sense of its scale, followed by another showing you the interior of one of its malls:

Multiple malls and hotels. I still can’t quite get over that one.
