Google confirms existence of mystery ships, teases their true purpose

After CNET discovered the existence of Google’s mysterious barges floating near San Francisco and Portland, many speculated they were data centers and then said they would eventually be turned into fancy retail showrooms for Google Glass. While Google has since claimed responsibility for the barges, they’re not quite revealing what their exact purpose is. According to a company spokesperson, it definitely won’t be a floating data center:

Google Barge … A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above. Although it’s still early days and things may change, we’re exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology.

“An interactive space where people learn about new technology” sounds very fitting for a product like Google Glass, since the company insists on giving each and every new owner an extensive personal introduction of the device. It could also turn out to be a showroom for other unannounced future Google products. I’m just a little bummed it won’t have a dinosaur in it.
