Now if you go to the beach in Australia, you’ll be able to check Twitter to see if there have been any sharks in the area.

That’s thanks to the good people at Surf Life Saving Western Australia, who have “connected transmitters on tagged sharks to an automated Twitter warning system,” according to AdWeek. The Drum also reports that there are roughly 320 sharks that have been tagged so far, and once they get within a kilometer from shore, a tweet goes out, detailing the type of shark, size and location.

This is an example of one of the tweets that’s been sent out from the Twitter account, which is @SLSWA. “Fisheries advise: tagged Bronze whaler shark detected at Garden Island (north end) receiver at 06:07:00 AM on 27-Dec-2013.”

It used to be that you’d have to check the newspapers or radio to find out if there were sharks in the waters near the beach, but thanks to Twitter, you can find out right away. “You might not have got some of that information until the following day in which case the hazard has long gone and the information might not be relevant,” Chris Peck, who is the program’s coordinator,  said to Sky News. “Now it’s instant information.”
