Target is made a target in new lawsuits

The Target nightmare continues, for both Target and their customers. In light of the massive data hack during the holiday season, Target has become the target in dozens of lawsuits. So far the company has been named in about 40 different lawsuits across the country.

Each of the different lawsuits claim that Target did little to protect their customer’s information. The suits violated various state laws on top of their negligence in the way they handled the breech.

A court filing in Louisiana stated that Target customers would have to worry about their data security for years. The filing goes on to calling the breach “as good as gold” for someone who wanted to steal a person’s identity.

If the lawsuits are settled in favor of the complainants Target could be on the hook for a lot of money. Those affected by the data hack may not see a lot of it, and chances are the payments will be made in increments over the period of several years.

You got that right. The reason there are so many lawsuits being filed is that class action lawsuits are pure gold for the lawyers. The settlements are often in the tens of millions, and they get 30%. Whichever lawyer wins the prize as the one selected to pursue the case is laughing all the way to the bank. The victims, by contrast, are often left with a pittance. [Can you tell I’m not a fan of this way of settling disputes?]
