Facebook has announced that additional gender options are now available on the social network. In addition to being identified simply as male or female, users can now select options such as “transgender, “intersex,” and “cisgender.” Users will also be able to choose which pronoun they’d like to be referred to as and new privacy options will allow users to choose who can see the gender section of their profile.
The social network worked with LGBT organizations to come up with the list of gender identities. But while it most certainly represents a step forward for expression in the world’s largest social network, it appears that there is still work to be done. Users must still choose between “son” or “daughter” to identify their queer children, and the “Interested In” section still only contains a choice between male or female.
