How to open search results in Firefox in a new tab [Guide]

Love using the search bar in Firefox yet annoyed that a search takes over the current tab? This very quick guide will teach you exactly how you can make all searches open in a new tab! Let’s get started!

Before We Begin

If you change your mind and want to change it back, follow the guide again and do the opposite.

The method described in this guide will work on any desktop operating system that supports Firefox — including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Open Firefox Search Results In A New Tab

Open up a new tab and type about:config.

Inside the about:config search box, type browser.search.openintab. Under value, change false to true.

Once you’ve changed the value from false to true, restart Firefox. Restarting is not totally necessary, but it’s probably a good idea to do so.  When Firefox has re-opened, every search you input into the search box will now open inside a new tab.

Conclusion

Firefox is a wonderful browser, but like all browsers, it needs to be tweaked and configured to be perfect. This little tweak seems insignificant but it’s actually a great way to increase browser usability. Enjoy!
