dotTech Advice

dotTech reviewed Genie Timeline Home (v2.1) back in 2010. The final verdict in that review summarizes how I feel about this program:

Although there are still a few key features I would like to see added to Genie Timeline Home Edition, Genie Timeline Home Edition is an excellent backup software; the focus on the user experience is especially exemplary. I give Genie Timeline Home Edition a thumbs up – it is a very good product.

Oh, by the way, the EaseUS To-Do Backup Free 4.0 ( DOES in fact give you the ability to create Bootable CD’s using either Linux base boot method or WinPE. You have to download some free files from Microsoft to create this full featured WinPE Bootable CD, but it enables many more recovery tools for your use from within the EaseUS backup software which I highly recommend.

A Linux based bootable disk is provided in Free and Trial Editions by default. Please note that only Disk and partition recovery and Clone features are available with this kind of bootable disk.

But the users of these Free and Trial editions are also allowed to create a WinPE bootable disk by installing Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) first, (you can find it here then using the WinPE builder that is provided by EaseUS inside of the backup software to create a WinPE bootable disk or you can create and export a WinPE ISO file and burn it with a third party software to your CD.
If you still need a Linux bootable disk after Windows AIK is installed, there is a spare copy of the Linux bootable ISO in the installation path. You can find it by accessing the path X:EaseUSTodo BackupbinLinuxISO (X is the partition where the product is installed). Using this image file you will be able to create a Linux bootable CD.

    Enjoy !!!

Well, Like the rest of you, I installed this program after downloading the 31MB file and it appeared to install and run just fine. One major problem however is that the ability to backup the extremely important “System Files” little cube is missing from the file selection page. No problem, I just flagged the files myself as additional files. However, the manual speaks about the need to create a Disaster Recovery Boot CD or Flash Drive or Virtual Image on your hard drive to boot from should a major disaster occur. Guess what… You can’t do it from this software because the options to do so are missing…..So….. I went to the manufacturers site and downloaded the commercial version of the software which is about 165.5MB’s and installed it over top of the existing installation… Guess what??? It installed just fine and now the option to create the Disaster Boot Disk is present. I created the ISO Image which I’ll burn to a CD and also had the program create a virtual bootable partition on my Hard Drive so I could boot directly from the protected virtual boot location on the drive if possible. Oh yeah, my Serial Number is still registered in the Help About area of the software, so it is truly running as a full commercial version of the product now.

I installed Genie Timeline but now I see no benefit that it has over the M$ freebie, “Synctoy”. Although it seeemed to uninstall there are folders that remained that I cannot delete because I do not have the proper “permission”. But I’m running as Administrator so why is that? Any help you can provide in deleting these Genie files would be much appreciated.
    Thanks Ashraf!

Yes, its bc WinPE is absent
All cies that do have WinPE included in their paid software, always exclude them on giveaways as they have to pay a licensing fee to MS for **every** copy, including giveaways!!
So of course, they cant afford it, when they are giving away their software.

It’s the same scenario on GOTD offers, eg Paragon, EaseUS, etc
    Hope it helps

Do you know please the difference between this giveaway version (31 MB) and the full version (162 MB)

  • Tortuga

    Hello everybody,

@Ash Many thanks for posting this giveaway!!
Have not use it yet, but read your review thoroughly & seems to be quite good, at least for my needs.
Maybe I will finally do the data bkups more frequently … :D

I have a PC & Laptops, so wanted to get more than one RegKey. So:

    1) There is a limit to one key per IP, even if we have more than one acct. Finally decided to try through a proxy. My tries got me the same RegKey n° ea time, even on different accts. So probably they are giving the same to all, unless I did something wrong. Can anybody confirm its the same??
If so, I can give a license to someone in need.

    2) But just now I went back, and read a post by a user asking if the license was per PC or per household. They responded, saying it is ***per household*** !! So, it’s even better !!

    Hope this helps

I have tried several different times to get on the list at Download Crew with no success whatsoever, and I never have problems doing that with anyone else. I don’t know why, I just never hear back from them. So due to this mysterious failure of what I’m sure they intend to work, I won’t be participating in this.

For anyone who miss out on getting this, I would like to offer a license key that I got.
I realized when I attempted to install it, that I was downgrading from a license Pro version (message).

So since I will not be installing the Home Edition, why let a license key go to waste. I will send it only one person, first come.
