About iOS Apps of the Day

iOS has over 600,000 apps. With so many apps out there, app discovery (aka finding new and useful apps) is extremely difficult. With our iOS Apps of the Day initiative, dotTech aims to change that. Everyday we post three apps, allowing our readers to discover new apps, daily. Enjoy! [Subscribe to dotTech to never miss an article: RSS Feed | E-mail]

RedLaser Barcode Scanner and QR Code Reader

RedLaser is the ultimate companion for the smart shopper. It allows you to searches millions of products across thousands of online and local retailers to find the best prices. It scans all major retail bar codes and provides information such as product descriptions, reviews, and nutritional information to help you make the right decision.  RedLaser also has a unique keyword, voice, and image recognition search, in case a bar code isn’t readily available to the shopper. The app also allows you to not only read QR codes, but also create personalized ones pointing to your information, contacts, website’s URL, geolocation, and more.

My experience with RedLaser has been quite beneficial. Whenever I am considering a purchase, I always scan the bar code to see if there are better deals out there. After scanning, the app will show the product details and reviews, as well as all online and local stores (along with a handy map to get you there) that sell the same product. You have the option of clicking on each store and the corresponding price, which leads you to the product page on that specific site. This is quite useful to me, because every store/website provides different information, which can be helpful in making a decision about your purchase. You can even buy the product from a different store within the app. It is worth noting that RedLaser also keeps a running history of your scanned items, in case you want to return to your shopping decision in the future.

Feeddler RSS Reader Pro

Feeddler is the ultimate Google Reader client for reading RSS stories in a simple and appealing interface. If you peruse the internet every day to read certain articles, why not just get them all in one place. All you need to do is follow the RSS feed for that website by adding it to your free Google Reader account. Feeddler allows the user to read all of your RSS feeds in once place with a seemingly unlimited amount of options and customizations. Some examples of those options are allowing you to manage (i.e. add, delete, rename, sort) your subscriptions, caching articles for offline reading, setting up articles to directly open in their original web page, and sharing the articles on Facebook and Twitter.

I am an avid RSS feed user, so Feeddler is an essential app for me. If you don’t mind ads and you don’t need the extra customizations and preferences listed on the app’s iTunes page, then the free version provides the same experience to the user. After doing much research on RSS reading apps for my phone, I settled on this one years ago and never looked back. In reality, Feeddler does everything there is to do as a Google Reader client and has never failed me.

Card Shark Collection – Deluxe

Card Shark is a diverse and growing collection of solitaire and traditional card games. This app combines a beautiful 3D landscape with  pleasing animation, sounds, and a smooth drag-drop interface. Card Shark Collection smartly sells the user on the concept of having all card games in one place, rather than individual apps containing one card game. And with the beautiful retina graphics and presentations, as well a constantly growing list of 60+ games, they make a great case for it. Besides the actual games themselves, Card Shark also allows you to change the design of the layout, card table, card backs, card fronts (decks), as well several other options.

There are so many individual card game apps on the App Store, with the better ones being paid. It makes the concept of Card Shark so appealing to the user, given that you can get so many games and options in one app. If you enjoy playing many different card games on your phone, I would suggest downloading the free version to test it out first.

Price: $2.99 (Free version available with 9 games)

Version discovered: 6.2.9

Requires: iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad; iOS 3.1 and up

Download size: 24.0 MB
