Today, Makerbot unveiled their Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner that it will sell along with its 3D printers.
What makes the scanner so cool is that you don’t actually need modeling or 3D printing skills to make use of it — just scan any object (up to 8 inches by 8 inches) and the Digitizer will give you a file that you can use to print out replicas with their 3D printers.
The company hopes that the device will be used in businesses, educational facilities and even the home. The easy nature of the device definitely makes that a possibility in the future:
“It’s a natural progression for us to create a product that makes 3D printing even easier. With the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, now everyone will be able to scan a physical item, digitize it, and print it in 3D – with little or no design experience.”
The device they showed during the announcement was a prototype, but they’re aiming to make it available by this fall.

So now imagine that but made even easier through the ability to scan objects and possibly tweak them to make them better. Or you know, you could always just make more of your stuff!
