Marvel is giving away over 700 first-issue comics right now, for free!

As part of a promotion that Marvel announced at the ongoing SXSW festival in Austin, over 700 first-issue comics are now free to download from now until 11PM ET on March 12th. That’s a lot of free comics!

All you need to do is download the ComiXology Comics app, which is available for both iOS and Android, and you’ll be able to download all those comics to your account, after which they’ll be available on any device that supports the app.

Alternatively, you can also grab and read them through a browser at the ComiXology website. But, at least for right now, you should stick with the apps, because you can probably guess what happens when a ton of people wanna download and read a ton of free comics on a website. Hint: The servers are down, down, down.

I’m not too much of a comics guy, so I probably can’t recommend any particular  first issues to start with. But if you like comics, and you like Marvel, you’ll find issues for all your favorites like The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man.

So what are you waiting for? Go grab them free comics! If you have any recommendations, please list them in the comments below!

Update: Due to overwhelming demand (and server crashes), ComiXology has had to suspend the promotion for the time being. Those interested in getting their free comics when the promotion is back up can sign up at this page set up by the company here.

[@jack] Hahaha! Completely understandable and no need to apologize. I have a feeling I might not be able to resist getting more after getting my hands on the first issues so this was a really good idea for them :)

Sorry Enrique, I was in such a hurry to get to the site to get the comics that I didn’t see anything past the links to their site.

I’ll make sure I read the complete article in future!

[@jack] I’ve already posted an update to the article and a link to the form :) But thanks! Hope it doesn’t take too long before we can get them free comics :p

The website is not holding up. They have put up this message:

    A Message From The CEO
Posted on March 11th, 2013 – 16:07 PM by David Steinberger
    To our customers:

It’s been a whirlwind weekend, and we’re fresh from SXSW where Marvel Comics launched their Marvel #1 promotion featuring over 700 free comics distributed via our platform.

We expected a high degree of excitement for the Marvel initiative – and had believed ourselves prepared – but unfortunately we became overwhelmed by the immense response. We’re still struggling to keep our systems up.

The result is that you aren’t getting your comics when and where you want.

We don’t like letting you down. Our teams are working around the clock to resolve these issues so that you can have the experience you’ve come to expect.

To that end, we’re pausing the Marvel Comics #1 promotion for the time being. For those of you that want to take advantage of the offer – you will get your comics! Until we are able to reinstate this program in our systems, please click here and fill out this simple form, so you can be informed as soon as there is an update.

We’ll be communicating with you as often as we can and deeply appreciate the outpouring of support we’ve seen from our customers while we right the ship.

    David Steinberger
    CEO and co-founder

[@etim] I know this isn’t an answer to your question, but you can also buy and read the comics from their website :)

Does anyone know how to get these apps to work on win XP?
I know that there’s a “tablet XP” of some sort, but it seems to require booting to another OS and a touchscreen.
How about just something to just simply use apps like this one?
