A report from TechCrunch claims that Facebook is in talks to buy Titan Aerospace, a drone company. Facebook is reportedly planning to use Titan’s drones as a means to provide parts of Africa with Internet from the sky. It’s very similar to Google’s Project Loon, only it uses drones instead of balloons.
The Solara 60 UAVs from Titan might just be up to the task despite the project’s ambition too: the drones are solar-powered and can stay in the air for up to five years without needing to land or refuel. They can be launched at night as well via battery power.
Facebook is said to be offering $60 million to purchase Titan Aerospace. It’s unclear how soon the deal will actually take place. What is clear, however, is that tech companies are now starting to look to the sky to keep the world a connected place.
