Berlin has become the first city in the world to have its own domain name. Both companies and individuals in Berlin can request for internet addresses that end in .berlin. The new domain “offers the possibility to highlight digitally that Berlin is where you live your life or base your business activities,” according to Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit.
A .berlin website will cost around 50 euros or approximately 70 US dollars. Other cities such as Paris, New York, London and Rome will be launching their own domain names in the future. The new domains are a result of the ICANN agency, which is in charge of website addresses, launching a catalogue to expand the amount of Top-Level Domains available.
