Samsung is giving free Galaxy S mobile phones to frustrated iPhone 4 users

Okay this is eerie. I just finished writing a rant regarding Apple fanboys trolling Samsung Galaxy S reviews (literally less than an hour ago). So imagine my surprise – and feeling of deja vu – when I read Samsung is giving out free Galaxy S smartphones (Samsung’s latest flagship, kick-ass mobile phone) to frustrated iPhone 4 users:

“Recently there has been a real increase in online activity from consumers dissatisfied with some of our competitors’ products. We decided to contact a cross section of individuals to offer them a free Samsung Galaxy S as a replacement, as we’re confident that once people have the phone in their hands, they’ll see how impressive it is for themselves.”

-Official statement from Samsung to

The free giveaway of the Galaxy S phones seems to be occurring via Twitter. A select number of users who have vented their frustration about their iPhone 4 on Twitter are being contacted by Samsung in regards to receiving a free Galaxy S. Although it seems like the iPhone 4 is the main target, Samsung’s latest tweet seems to indicate users of any competitor’s handset are eligible:

Know someone who’s been experiencing issues with their phone? Spread the word they could try our new Samsung #GalaxyS to see how it compares

While Samsung does not provide too much detail on how they are conducting this giveaway, it seems to be occurring in Europe only.

An interesting thought occurred to me. Apple offered iPhone 4 customers the chance for a full refund. So, will the iPhone 4 owners that get a free Galaxy S from Samsung be able to refund their iPhone 4? I think they might just be able to do that.

Now I wish I had bought an iPhone 4, faced signal problems for a month, and ranted about it on Twitter; I could have been holding a Samsung Galaxy S right now. Enjoy for those who are lucky enough to get a Galaxy S.

(As a side note, Samsung is also running a win-a-Galaxy-S-for-free sweepstakes on Facebook for those who forgot to vent about iPhone 4 frustrations on Twitter.)

  • Thank you for discussing a pleasant topic. I think, it was an interesting blog and the topics it has covered are all very impressive for me personally to look through your page. I have bookmarked it and will keep visiting very often.

  • Just to put these number in perspective, Apple sells 8M iPhones a quarter. If Samsung really manages to sell 10M Galaxy S by the end of the year, it’ll sell around 30% as many Androids as Apple sells iPhones. Now, apple might increase the iPhone sales rate, but we need to remember that the Galaxy only came out in the second quarter.
    Very impressive achievement for Samsung.

Personally, having owned a Samsung Blackjack, I will likely never buy Samsung again, ever. It was really that bad. And I had three. Well, five if you count two being replaced under warranty. That said, I have no love of Apple either. Their initial “just don’t hold it that way” response to the problem, is classic Apple.

Thanks for your researching efforts on products from GOTD…listing the pros and cons as well as alternatives! Please keep up the good work. It makes it easier for myself to see it all in a “nutshell”.  Thanks again!

@AlanR:  Not sure about discriminatory, but commercially self-defeating? Definitely.

If Samsung is keen to embrace an articulate intelligent audience for its products, then the last place to seek to build a customer base is in an Internet social networking site.

(Er: wotever that is. The social networking site I’m in is called A Pub.)

@AlanR:While I agree with you about social networking, and tweeting, I don’t see grounds for litigation. If I have something I want to give away, do I not have the right to set the terms?

  • AlanR

Whatever is on offer – it is of NO USE to those of us that avoid ALL social networking sites like the plague.! And as for TWEETing, that’s strictly for the bird(brain?)s.
Could this be a case for litigation on discriminatory grounds for being excluded from access to whatever it is through regular channels (e.g. email).?

iphone isn’t the only good device out there. what is looking like a really nice device is the new Dell streak. though we have to wait until the end of the week to really see it in action. Apple really needs to know that they are not the only game in town when it comes to good devices.

@Ashraf: Actually, I thought you completely ignored the comment above and the email and didn’t read them at all. That’s the reason why. You completely misunderstood me.

  • Ashraf

    @Locutus: Yep, yep.

  • Unfortunately it’s Samsung UK, fortunately they’re unlocked.

@Lascannon: The fact that you have e-mailed me three times in less than 24 hours and have posted the same comment regarding the same issue after I deleted your first comment serves as proof as to why you were banned from the forums. Now either stop asking; I will reply to your e-mail when I have time (I receive many, more important e-mails daily).

Ashraf, check your email and reply please. Thanks.
