Google Glass gets rooted by famous iOS jailbreaker

Like seemingly every other piece of consumer electronics these days, it was only a matter of time before Google Glass was cracked open for savvy coders to do as they please.

Jay Freeman, who goes by the handle Saurik, gained root access to Google Glass’ version of Android after a couple of hours working on it. Freeman, who is known for his numerous contributions to the iOS jailbreak community, says that he took advantage of a well-known Android 4.0.4 exploit to achieve this.

Unfortunately for Freeman, the Explorer Edition of Google Glass that has been making its way into people’s hands lately isn’t compatible with prescription glasses yet, so we might have to wait awhile before we see what he does with it. Compatibility with prescription glasses will most likely show up in a later version of the device, perhaps the consumer version that is set to his roughly a year from now.

The good thing here is Freeman isn’t the only one who has gained root access on Google Glass, just one of the more notable developers. It shouldn’t be too much longer now before we start seeing something that maybe even Google itself didn’t think when making the wearable device.
