Alcatel-Lucent and BT have announced that the “fastest broadband ever” has successfully been achieved in a recent speed test in London.
Conducted on a 255-mile link between the BT Tower and Ipswich, the speed test yielded an impressive result of 1.4 terabits per second. This speed is in a completely different universe even when compared to relatively impressive services like Google Fiber. According to the report, that kind of speed would be enough to send 44 uncompressed HD films a second. Again, completely ridiculous.
Though we won’t be seeing speeds like this in our homes anytime soon (it’s many years away from that point), the development is significantly important for ISPs, since it proves existing broadband infrastructure is capable of carrying much more information. Maybe an end to data caps? Keep dreaming, brah.
