dotTech Advice

Ashampoo WinOptimizer is one of those jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none system utilities. WinOptimizer 8 is the latest in this line of software.

WinOptimizer 8 is definitely an improvement over its predecessors, such as WinOptimizer 7. Much of the tools found in WinOptimizer 7 are in WinOptimizer 8 but these tools have been tweaked and improved in WinOptimizer 8. For example, the Internet Cleaner now supports Chrome and Safari, in addition to Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Opera. Plus WinOptimizer 8 has a new interface which, in my opinion, is better than the one used in WinOptimizer 7. However, WinOptimizer 8 still has issues regarding some tools being half-baked.

For example, the Uninstaller is still only a basic uninstaller that doesn’t search for leftover files after installation; the File Encrypter & Decrypter tool is not very descriptive as to what encryption algorithm is used (I even looked in the Help file) nor does it allow users to batch encrypt/decrypt — you must encrypt/decrypt one file at a time; Internet Cleaner doesn’t provide a feature to securely delete Internet usage tracks (like CCleaner offers); the Undeleter is a very basic look-at-file-table-and-recover-deleted-files type and won’t be able to do advanced recoveries; etc.

Now of course with jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none system utilities half-baked tools are sort of expected. The idea with these system utilities is quantity over quality. So, as a system utility, WinOptimizer 8 is a good program — it just isn’t great.

Grab WinOptimizer 8 if you want it. Personally speaking, however, I will stick to CCleaner, Eraser, Auslogics Disk Defrag, RevoUninstaller, and AxCrypt for my privacy/registry cleaning, secure deleting, defragging, uninstalling, and encryption needs. (All five of the just-mentioned software are freeware.)

    @Helen Dootz:

I had IObit Advanced System Care 5.1 Pro. Even though I kept it out of startup, it ran routines anyway, freezing/slowing computer and filling up my GoBack partition so GoBack wouldn’t go back. Don’t know what other damage it did. I RevoPro uninstalled it and most of the slowdown and freezing disappeared..

At one time I moved all of my folders off of my C: drive onto my D: and it was as easy as dragging the folder to its new location. I was using Returnil at the time.

I did find this link: that shows how to do it. Seems there is a locations tab on the properties windows and it lets you move the folder.

@Rick C.: Yeah, sounds like a bug. Thanks for letting me know its happening.

  • Rick C.

@Ashraf, Consider it done… What it looked like was remove EVERYTHING from the right side…
Subscribe to dotTech, Discoveries of the Day, Mobile Mania, Et cetera… and expand the page so it takes up the whole page… That is what it looked like

  • Ashraf

@Rick C.: Sounds like a bug. Can you send me a screenshot if it happens again?

  • Rick C.

@Emrys, was it expanded width wise? Nothing on the right hand side?

  • Ashraf

@Emrys: ??? People, what new look?! Someone send me a screenshot.

  • Great freebee. Thanks. I like the new look to your page.

  • Ashraf

@Rick C.: No problem. You just kind of confused me, haha…

  • Rick C.

Must had been my bad… i had another browser open and several tabs on each browser and your page was expanded out width wise… after reloading this page it was back to normal… That was a first Sorry

  • Ashraf

@Rick C.: Say what? I didn’t change any design. o_O Are you talking about the new categories?

  • Rick C.

@Ashraf, I see you changed the design of your website today… Looks nice

  • jan

@Helen Dootz: No , keep Advanced Syst Care, it got tools enough to control your computer. Ashampoo has more tools but that can cause a problem when you remove something that you shouldn’t remove and by myself I use A.S C. pro too and i’am very satisfied. regards from Holland.

Thanks for this. I haven’t let one of these types of things slip through in a long time, but knowing there is a tool to help out if I do is nice.

With this or other unwanted tag-along toolbars and such, try

    T-Tools’ Antiseptic

to remove the invaders. Neat little free utility.

  • Steve Kunkel

Goodlord! DO *NOT* accidentally allow the toolbar to install!!!!
That thing is the most invasive persistent trick-candle piece of crapware I’ve seen in a long time.
Generally I like Ashampoo’s stuff, but I don’t know what the heck they were thinking with that thing.

  • Mr.Dave

    Registration page now says:

    Ashampoo® WinOptimizer 8
    Limited offer
EXPIRED: Ashampoo® WinOptimizer 8 for free
Full versions are no more available.

I guess I missed this one…. but thanks for the writeup, I like that your review is objective and explains your reasons for both the good and bad aspects of the product.

Is not giving me a full license, but a 40 day trial extention!!!
I did everything as instructed in this page.

Pour les utilisateurs de langue française, ce programme s’installe en anglais mais fonctionne en français.
Ashraf a raison : après un premier aperçu, je pense qu’il faut l’utiliser avec précaution.

    Thanks again Ashraf.

I didn’t know “RevoUninstaller” too. I like it, nice.
Better (tested) than Ccleaner I use both the free programs “Auslogics Registry Cleaner” AND “Wise RegCleaner Pro” (one after the other of course). No bad registry keys can resist them! lol.

I am using IOBit’s System Care Pro, do I need this? Is it better then IOBit?

If I understand correctly what you want to tweak, this link should help. Follow the same procedure to change your default music, picture, etc folders as well. Replace “dot” with “.”, of course. :)

    Merci beaucoup, Ashraf !

  • Kumar

    Hi Ashraf,

(Forgot to ask) Will this make problems to the “System Mechanic” that already installed?

  • Kumar

Do I need this, if I have “System Mechanic” (Last week’s GiveAway)

  • Janet

The only thing I would be interested in is the tweaks–if they are in fact for Windows 7. All the old tweak programs seemed to stop with XP, and I really miss them…..For instance, how to change the My Documents target to my document folder on my E:DATA drive. I don’t use any Libraries because I don’t keep any data (docs, downloads, etc etc) on my C: drive. I would like to change pretty muh all of the default target locations….

Does this app have extensive Win 7 tweaks? Recommendations for other programs…?

  • Farrukh

    AOA Ashraf
    Thanks a lot….

When I got registration e-mail, there is “Ashampoo® WinOptimizer 8 (F_BET_us) ” in the name. Is “F_BET_us” is for Beta or just some product code?

  • Seamus McSeamus

Not a big fan of these “one ring to rule them all” tools, myself. In my experience they tend to be much too aggressive, and if you aren’t somewhat knowledgeable about what you are doing, you end up with a system that doesn’t function properly.

re: “I will stick to CCleaner, Eraser, Auslogics Disk Defrag, RevoUninstaller, and AxCrypt…”

    Excellent guidance.

Incredibly, out of the kazillions of options, I’ve gravitated to four out of those same five. BTW, AxCrypt is one of the highest-quality softwares ever. It’s been absolutely 100% reliable for the entire time I’ve owned a PC – outstanding.

More to the point, though: personally I had *disastrous* results trusting something similar to WinOptimizer (though not by Ashampoo) in the way of a multifunction “Windows optimizer” type of thing. Despite having a sterling reputation, it irreversibly destroyed the system I had at the time.

So even though I love some of the other Ashampoo products, I can’t be tempted and much prefer a one-thing-at-a time approach.
